Last October, on a whim, I decided to make a trip to BlogHer Food 2010. I had totally not planned on going…originally.

It must have been in the stars, however. Everything aligned.

Before I knew it, I was in San Francisco (my hometown), staying at my parents house (who were on another one of their worldly adventures), with three blogging friends as housemates (Wendy – Celiacs in the House, Tia – Glugle Gluten Free, and Alisa – Go Dairy Free and Alisa Cooks).

It was a trip that was meant to be for me. It solidified friendships of those I had met in the past and it brought new friendships into my life that I never expected.

Alisa Fleming is a perfect example of one of these unexpected friendships. She runs the Go Dairy Free website, the Alisa Cooks Blog, and she is the author of THE go-to dairy-free book, Go Dairy Free (which incidentally has 59 reviews on Amazaon: 50 of those are 5 stars, 9 are 4 stars, not one single 3,2,or 1 star).

She is small, but a total mighty powerhouse.

She is an inspiration to me and absolutely nothing to be reckoned with. She is an expert, in my opinion, about all things Dairy Free.

I ordered a copy of her book about two years ago.  I cannot tell you how many times, since then, I have referenced the 28 chapters of this book.  I will dare say that this IS the Dairy-Free Bible.

The subtitle of this book states this to be: The Guide and Cookbook for Milk Allergies, Lactose Intolerance, and Casein-Free Living.  This could not be more true.  It is the guide.

It is also the reason I am giving a copy of this book away.

You will want this book if you are living, or even considering going, dairy free. It covers everything. It gives detailed information of what dairy is, how to live, eat out, and grocery shop when living dairy-free, which dairy substitutes to use, and amazing recipes to use them in. It is, undeniably, the best resource about living dairy free that I have seen yet.

I am not just saying this because I love Alisa.  I had this book long before I ever met her.  I was amazed, awed, and inspired by this book the first time I ever read through it.

Meeting her in person just put the dairy-free icing on my gluten-free and dairy-free cake.  Her heart, her energy, and her passion for living this way shines through in every aspect of her personality and pops out from the pages of this book.

I have cooked my way through many of her recipes.   The majority of them are perfectly simple to convert to our gluten-free lifestyle as well.

Breakfast-Worthy Banana Bread

Recipe from “Go Dairy Free: The Guide and Cookbook for Milk Allergies, Lactose Intolerance, and Casein-Free Living” by Alisa Fleming; recipe also posted on her blog, Alisa Cooks

This Recipe is Vegan, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Soy-Free, Sugar-Free, Optional Nut-Free, and easily adapted to be Gluten Free

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Unsweetened Milk Alternative of Choice

2 Tablespoons Ground Flaxseed

2 Cups Whole Grain Spelt Flour or Whole Wheat Flour (For GLUTEN FREE: Substitute 1 cup gluten-free flour blend of choice  + 1 cup Almond Flour or Quinoa Flour, if nut-free )

1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

1/2 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg

1-1/2 Teaspoons Baking Soda

1/4 Teaspoon Salt

1/4 Cup Grapeseed or Coconut Oil

1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

3 to 4 Medium-Sized, Very (Very) Ripe Bananas, Mashed (about 1-1/2 to 2 cups mashed)*

1/2 Cup Nuts, Dried Fruit, or Other Add-ins (optional)

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan. In a large mixing bowl combine the milk alternative and flaxseed and set aside. In a medium-sized bowl, sift together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. Returning to your mixing bowl, blend in the oil, vanilla, and bananas until well mixed. Stir in the dry ingredients by hand, being careful not to over-mix; a few lumps are okay. Gently fold in the nuts, fruit, or any other add-ins, if using. Spread the batter into your prepared loaf pan, and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is browned and resilient to the touch. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 to 15 minutes before removing it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Mini-Loaf Option: The loaf pictured above is actually a mini-loaf. This recipe will make four mini loaves, baked at 350º for about 22 to 25 minutes. I topped the loaves with some sliced almonds just before popping them in the oven and subbed the vanilla extract with 3/4 teaspoon almond extract for a slightly almond vibe.

* Alisa’s Note: I prefer to use a full 2 cups of banana for the deepest flavor and a very moist bread, but using 1/2 cup less will allow the bread to rise a bit more.

Yields 10 to 12 servings

    Oh man. I would LOVE this book. I’ve been living w/ chronic diahrea for the past 2 years and just a couple weeks ago, I had a Naturopath test me for a bunch of food sensitivities and wheat and dairy were high on the list! (Along with bananas, strawberries, pork, beef, tuna, and *gasp* chocolate.) This book would be a godsend.

    Hey Kim – This is a book that I have yet to add to my collection. It’s on my ever-growing list! I love Alisa and would love to meet her (you too of course!). The banana bread sounds delish. I’d love to try a sugar-free banana bread! My symptoms before giving up dairy weren’t really obvious to me until I gave up dairy. Does that make sense :) The most obvious one for me was leg aches. I had leg aches my entire life. A couple of times a week. About a year after going DF, I had some dairy, two days later I had a leg ache and the light bulb went off! Sorry for the short story :) xo

But it fits because I have been planning on reviewing Alisa’s book for over a month and something always came up. The last one being her own thin mint recipe, which I just had to make gf so I could eat them that day. ;)

    I would love this book! I am attempting to go dairy free, but my children are dairy free. HWen I don’t eat dairy, I have less issues with digestion problems. My older son, 3 years old, no longer has sleep apnea, sleeps through the night, better all around breating, no more itchy skin that bleeds because he scratches it so much, better social interaction, and I just read about “allergic shiners or blak eyes” and he no longer has these as bad. Now I just need to be as faithful to to being dairy free as I am with my kids being dairy free!

    Yikes! It took me a minute to realize I didn’t go to Blog Her Food. Where did I go?

    Anyway, I don’t have this cookbook, but will go buy it on Amazon right now. Thank you for reminding me. This banana bread looks moist and the texture looks like regular banana bread. Alisa must be doing something right! Off to satisfy my “one click ordering” addiction. =)

    I LOVE Alisa’s book!! It’s the perfect guide for people who are newly dairy/casein-free because she does such a fantastic job teaching all the in’s and out’s of dairy-free living (not only about questionable ingredients and/or ingredient substitutions), but Alisa also addresses the different types of casein found in the milk of other mammals and whether they are ‘safe’ for people with a casein intolerance.

    Okay, that was my first and last comment for today, my head isn’t pleased with being fully vertical yet, LOL!

    Without realizing I was allergic to dairy, I ended up passing on antibodies to my son while nursing him and causing him to have the worst ezcema and open sores while I nursed him. The moment I found out, I cut dairy out and within weeks he was completely healed. We’ve now found out that he is allergic to dairy, along with gluten, eggs, sugar, nuts, and the list goes on. His ezcema has once again cleared up since removing these items. Can’t wait to try this banana bread with him!! Sounds amazing. I would love the cookbook and some inspiration for feeding a sensitive lil guy.

    I would love a copy of this book. I have been dairy-free since high-school and though I am able to eat a little dairy now just recently I still can’t eat much and would still like to make most if not everything dairy-free. I get a lot of congestion and sometimes stomach pain from dairy.

    I am very sensitive to lactose, and even with lactase enzymes don’t do very well. My symptoms ranged from itchy skin, bloating, reflux, sleep aponea symptoms, burping and really, really bad dreams.
    I try and take it really easy with dairy tasting at work (I’m a chef) and usually have to have an antacid tablet if I’m making creamy dishes.
    Great looking book, the more wisdom shared, the better we’ll all be.

    My daughter has a TON of food allergies, Top of the list are Eggs, Wheat/Gluten, Milk (cow, goat, casein protein, whey protein). Her symptoms were 3 years of not sleeping thru the night once, face rash, tummy hurt, diarrhea / loose stools, HUGE attitude/sensitives issues – highs and lows, would be very irritable and emotional. Now my daughter is 3 years and 2 months old and we are on day 55 without any of her 21 foods in her diet. She sleeps 13 hours straight, no rash, even keeled, solid poop and an all around wonderful child. I love the cook it allergy free app and would REALLY love more reference for dairy free and the cookbook!

    I’m so excited to try this recipe. My version is sadly lacking. It worked really well the first 2 times and then I don’t know what happened, but it’s not great. I also love the fact there’s no added sugar. I gave up wheat, dairy and sugar almost 2 years ago. I lost weight, no longer feel bloated and no longer experience the massive mysterious stomach aches that would come sometimes after eating.

    I was in debilitating pain every day. I would have to lie in bed for an hour each morning until it subsided enough to get up. Some of my other symptoms you really don’t want to know! LOL

    My first indication of having a hard time with dairy was that I couldn’t drink milk during both my pregnancies, as it upset my stomach especially if I had it with meals. After my last child was born, I still had a hard time drinking milk (bloating, diarrhea, general tummy troubles). I decided to try soy milk because of a suggestion in an immune health book I had picked up and many of these symptom disappeared. I’ve always been a cheese fanatic and the more I learned the more I realized that I was craving cheese unnaturally. I started to take that out too and my eczema started to improve as well, not to mention the touch of asthma I had wasn’t noticeable anymore. I feel so much better.

    Hi Kim! Well I am living Gluton Free and Weight Watchers fairly well many changes GF Day 5 and WW Day 60. Had a wonderful talk with a Chiropracter the other day and told him what I am doing and he suggested to dairy free to my lifestyle as quick as I could manage to help relieve all my symptoms and to feel great so I need some great recipes!     Aside from general fatigue (likely more related to gluten-allergies) my dairy allergy symptoms are mostly sinus related. I can tell you as quick as a sniffle whether something has dairy in it! Would love to win the book and can’t wait to try this recipe. Thanks.

    Before my son went dairy and gluten free, he had behavioral issues. Apparently, gluten and casein can act like an opiate on the brain of some people. We tried medications, counseling, everything! He gained a ton of weight and was either sleeping or throwing tantrums. In desperation, we tried the gluten free, casein free diet. It completely changed him and the dynamics of our family. We all follow the diet because at his age, it’s difficult to tell him – you eat that, but I’m going to eat this. Blogs like these definitely make it easier to find yummy recipes!

    Ity’s funny, cause I am so good at staying 100% gluten free, but I struggle so much more with dairy (and sugar!)… Every time I eat it, I spend lots of time in the bathroom the next day, get gaseous and just feel crappy. I used to get really irritable as well, and depressed. It is amazing what food can do to us!
    I definitely need to get better at keeping the dairy out!

    I have been through the ringer with my health- most recently battling thyroid cancer, the resulting severe hypothyroidism, and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Conventional doctors did very little to help me feel better, but after a lot of research I discovered that going gluten and dairy free may be the ticket- I still have a ways to go, but I’m feeling so much better and the one time I ditched the diet I was in pain and severly fatigued for a week so I know I’m on the right track. Switching to gluten free has been fairly easy, but combined with dairy free it is much more challenging- I would LOVE to win this cookbook, I’ve heard so many good things about it!

    My friend just found out that her kids are both lactose and gluten intollerant, so if I won, I’d give the book to her, but I found the chocolate waffle recipe on your site and I think I’m going to have them all over for breakfast! It looks yummy!

    I would love a copy of this book. I just realized I was more lactose intolerant than I thought. I’ve had a war going on in my gut for a long time and my MD told me it was because of my seizure meds. I finally realized on my own that it was lactose and have been fine since eliminating them. But I don’t really know much about it. Thanks

    After 10 years of fighting and arguing with docs to try and find a cause for my 24/7 nausea, chronic digestive issues, fatigue, aches/pains, headaches and more I finally found an integrative medicine clinic who at least are trying to help me feel better…even if they’re not sure what’s wrong. I’ve been on elimination diets for going on eight months now and it’s all two steps forward, ten steps (or leaps!) back with the food testing. So far I’m pretty sure it’s no gluten, no dairy, no soy, no xanthan or guar gums, and very limited with refined sugars and virtually all types of beans. Since I have ran across the Go Dairy Free site four times today alone while looking for product or substitution info, it’s becoming quite clear I need this book!! Thanks for hosting the contest.

    Had stomach discomfort for months becoming increasing worse as I get older and headaches. It’s amazing how many packaged foods have dairy products and I hope this book will help me avoid these.
